Assignment
As weve discussed in class, scholars in the social sciences, natural sciences, and humanities belong to different academic discourse communities, each with its own vocabulary and way of using language. One result of this is that the genre of the scholarly journal article can be divided into subgenres based on the discipline in which it is being used. For example, a typical scholarly journal article in the humanities is very different from one in the natural sciences. The two articles you will compare in this assignment represent these two distinct disciplinary areas and are thus tailored to different discourse communities.
To compare these articles, you will write four paragraphs, each focused on a different aspect:
Organizationhow the authors organize the information and evidence in each article
Vocabulary/languagehow the authors use language, including vocabulary specific to each discourse community
Evidencehow the authors present evidence (such as data, quotations, and sources)
Documentationhow the authors document their sources
For each aspect, you should compare the two articles to illustrate how they are tailored to different discourse communities. For example, why does one article use a numbering system for documenting sources (CSE) while the other uses an author-centered documentation style (MLA)? What specialized vocabulary does each article use, and how does it reflect the knowledge and preferences of each discourse community?
