For this exercise, you will write an analysis paper about either Your Name, Hero or Children of Men. This will be a contextual analysis of the film, so your topics need to be about broader topics that the film speaks to and connects with in a contextual manner. Stay away from a more specific textual analysis (such as the technical filmmaking aspects). That was for your 1st paper.
If you do not know what the difference between textual and contextual analysis is, you need to go to the lectures Canvas page and look up the Essay Formatting powerpoint and Approaches to Analysis part 1 powerpoint that discusses it before you pick your topics. You can also message me or ask me in person if youre still unsure. Do not try to guess what contextual analysis means.
The topics you choose to write about in your body paragraphs is up to you, but it must relate to the film you chose and they must be relevant to a contextual analysis of that film. You do not have to write about the strengths of the film. You can write about weaknesses the film has as well.
Requirements:
The paper must follow the essay format we discussed in class. As such, you should have a minimum of three topics and therefore three body paragraphs. The more your paper strays from the essay format, the more points you lose.
Research is required. For this assignment, you will need two secondary scholarly sources and one primary source or 3 secondary scholarly sources. Since all body paragraphs must have research anyway, you can spread them out and have one piece of research per paragraph for this assignment.
If you dont know what a secondary scholarly source is, you need to go to the lectures Canvas page and look up the Research Part 2 powerpoint, as well as review Week 4s in-lab exercise. You can also message me or ask me in person if youre still unsure. Do not try to guess what a secondary scholarly source is.
You should have in-text citations in MLA format for all the research you use in the paper. Also, a Works Cited page is required for this assignment and it must be in the MLA format. Please double check your citations to make sure its actually in MLA.
These powerpoints on the lecture page are relevant to this paper and its requirements and are worth reviewing: Thesis Statements, Essay Formatting Intro Paragraphs, Body Sections, Conclusion Paragraphs, Research part 1 and part 2. Other powerpoints may be relevant depending on your topics.
Double-space, 12 point font. Top of the page should only have your name, the class and the date. An essay title is optional.
