While no two ethnographic studies are identical, we can often learn how to collect data from studying the activities of other ethnographers. Purpose: Develop an understanding of the different forms that ethnographic data take Enhance the ability to identify a diversity of ethnographic research tools (methods) in action Recognize how different research methods are combined to produce robust and nuanced knowledge Appreciate a complex student-initiated and produced ethnographic research project Tasks: Listen to the Ghost Bike podcast (You will probably want to listen two or more times. Please note, also, that the sound levels are a bit uneven in this student project.) As you are listening, make a list of the different types of data (i.e. interview responses, public policies, etc) and data sources (i.e. interviewees, news stories, public documents, signage, etc) used by the ethnographers. Identify how the ethnographers collected each type of data. Did they interview? If so, whom did they interview? Observe? If so, what did they observe? Etc. List each of data collection methods they used.Include this list in your submitted assignment. (Hint: It may be useful to organize this in a grid.) Choose any two of the data collection methods employed by the student ethnographers, and in a few paragraphs, Identify how the data collection methods contributed to the overall ethnography. What data did each method provide? Did the different methods provide different kinds of data or different forms of the same kinds of data? Be sure to explain your reasoning.
