Hypothetical Clinical Situation:

You are the nurse who will be in charge of the care of a 73-year-old man who enters the Emergency Room (ER) with a medical diagnosis of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The patient reports that he has “difficulty breathing when walking short distances” (the breathing rate is 22 breaths per minute). He also states that at the same time his “heart feels like it is accelerated” (the heart rate is 110 beats per minute). He says he is “tired all the time,” and while talking to you about his health history he continually twists his hands and looks out the window.
