1. Imagine you were officially labeled deviant in junior high school. How do you think this would have affected your life and your opportunities? Would your parents, teachers, and peers have treated you differently? Where do you think you would be now if you had been labeled delinquent?
2. Based on the reading, what types of primary deviance do the Saints and the Roughnecks commit? Who goes on to commit secondary deviance? What are examples from the article of secondary deviance?
3. Another surprising finding Chambliss mentioned in studying the Saints and the Roughnecks was “how easily some of them [the two football players] changed their self-image, their behavior and their lives” (Inderbitzin & Boyd, 2010). What do you think might have made the difference for those young men? What does that suggest for how we treat delinquents?
