Family literacy refers to the ways parents, children, and caregivers use literacy at home and in the community?. ?When we value students’ home and cultural literacy identities, we create a classroom literacy environment where classroom literacy practices are connected to home literacy identities. For this assignment, you will select and interview a parent or guardian of an EC (age 4) – grade 6 student to discover more about the ways that this student “engages in acts of literacy at home.” You will then list 3 meaningful ways to bridge home and school literacies for this student if you were their classroom teacher. Your final paper will include: 1. Introduction: Introduce the student and parent/caregiver (pseudonyms or first names only) – Tell me about the student and the family. Some things you may want to include are the student’s grade level and what you learned about their interests. Also, tell me about the family. What did you learn about their traditions and values; culture and language(s)? Goals for their child?… etc… 2. Literacy Practices: Include what you learned about the specific ways in which this student engages in literacy outside of the classroom. How does the family engage in literacy at home? Does this student enjoy reading and writing? What genres or types of books does the student like to read or write? Think about “non-traditional” types of literacy like comics, graphic novels, multimedia, etc…Be sure to include specific examples from the interview and include quotes from the parent or caregiver. 3. Bridge Home & School: Connecting all you have learned from the parent/caregiver, list 3 meaningful ways that you, as this child’s teacher, can connect your classroom literacy instruction to bridge home & school, and to foster a positive literacy identity for this child. Be sure to consider all of the language arts (reading, writing, speaking, listening, visual representation). Chapter 5 (in the Responsive Literacy textbook) may help with some ideas.
