Does democracy facilitate economic reform?

Paper details:

Hence, after the collapse of the communist regime on the territory of the former USSR, it was natural that it was replaced by democracy. The process of democratization, the transition from authoritarianism to liberal democracy, included in itself creation on new political structures, adoption of multiparty elections, transition from a command to market economy; creation of new institutions, supported by creation and implementation of a new legal framework. Intro of political and economic reforms in the post-communist countries of the former Soviet Union and the Eastern Europe was simultaneous – both from the desire of citizens to live in a democratic society and integrate with the West, on social, political and economic levels, and pressure from the West itself, international organizations, such as IM or the Bank, as well as EU, which holds democracy as a requisite for accession negotiations.
