Data Science Code of Professional Conduct Rules 2-8

Pick only one, not one from each! Then find some incident in Computer or Data Ethics that occurred where either that rule or principle was violated and caused harm. or an incident where it is know that the rule was specifically applied and had an impact in the case. For example, Rebekah Jones was fired by the State of Florida for refusing to manipulate COVID-19 data.

This is an example of an individual upholding Rule 8 of the Data Science Code of Professional Conduct, specifically “If a data scientist reasonably believes a client is misusing data science to communicate a false reality or promote an illusion of

understanding, the data scientist shall take reasonable remedial measures, including disclosure to the client, and including, if necessary, disclosure to the proper authorities.” The incident must be different than that you chose for Essay #2.

Your essay should describe the case, indicate the consequences and any resolution to the incident, and indicate how the rule or principle was violated or upheld.

You essay must also indicate the local and global impact of this incident.

Who was impacted? How far did the impact reach? Did the incident result in changes to laws or policies?

To ensure variety, no incident can be used by no more than five students. When you select an incident, go to the Essay 3 Incident topic in the Ethics in Action discussion forum. See if someone has selected that same incident.

If not, create a thread describing the incident. If you see that someone has already selected the incident, ensure there are less than four replies to the thread. If there are four or more replies, select another subject.

No more than five students will be allowed to write an essay on a particular incident. If there are less than four replies, add one indicating you are writing the essay on the topic.

Write a 1000-2000 word essay. Essays with less than 1000 words will not be

accepted. Clearly indicate and summarize what rule or principle you are addressing.

Be sure to include proper citations for the sources you use and anything that you

quote. An essay with no references is not an essay, it’s an opinion piece.

Do not cut and paste content from any source except for direct quotes, which must be indicated as such as property cited.
