NOTES MBA5140 WEEK 8

Assignment: Create a Quality Control Process to Improve Operations

Instructions

Your audience for this presentation will be the board of directors, which includes, for purposes of this assignment, those responsible for investigating, launching, and managing product recalls. Your presentation should include the following:

A List of keys, relevant issues related to the product recall, including, near-term and long-term negative impact.

Discussion of findings related to current or past service/ recall practices leading to the current situation.

The company’s response to the product failure (e.g., delayed recall, insufficient response, lack of communication).

Recommendation for leveraging Information Technology personnel and resources to improve the recall process.

Recommendations for improving operations and supply chain management independent of IT operations using a quality management system, such as Six Sigma or another system. Be sure to introduce the system to the board and explain how it might prevent future issues.

Timeline for completing the next steps toward an improved recall process.

Length: 10-15 pages (excluding the cover sheet, title page, and references) giving a complete analysis of the issue, failures, and how to incorporate quality systems to ensure recalls becoming less necessary. Ensure you cover what to do should a quality issue get into the market.

References: Include a minimum of 10 scholarly resources within the last 5 years on quality management, past recall failures and successes, recall planning. The majority should be from peer-reviewed journals.

Six Sigma is a set of techniques and tools for process improvement. It was introduced by American engineer Bill Smith while working at Motorola in 1986. A six-sigma process is one in which 99.99966% of all opportunities to produce some features of a part are statistically expected to be free of defects. Wikipedia

Six Sigma a set of management techniques intended to improve business processes by greatly reducing the probability that an error or defect will occur. Six Sigma is a statistical- and data-driven process that works by reviewing limit mistakes or defects. It emphasizes cycle-time improvements while reducing manufacturing defects to no more than 3.4 occurrences per million units or events.

Example Wipro: As a leader in the software development industry, consumer goods production and customer service were lacking. Its defects were soon neutralized with the help of Six Sigma implementation. Microsoft: The secret behind their stellar service record and product line is Six Sigma.

Six Sigma tools; Continuous Improvement, Culture of Quality, Lean, Process Management.

Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Statistics and Value Stream Mapping (VSM).

Calculating Six Sigma; We must compute the total number of defects, the total number of opportunities, and the defect rate to calculate the process sigma rating. A defect is something beyond the requirements of the customer.

What are the 6 points of Six Sigma? The Six Sigma DMADV process (define, measure, analyze, design, verify) is an improvement system used to develop new processes or products at Six Sigma quality levels.

A quality management system is a collection of business processes focused on consistently meeting customer requirements and enhancing their satisfaction. It is aligned with an organization’s purpose and strategic direction. Wikipedia
