Week 3 Paper Checkpoint: Research

Now that we’ve found a health claim, and critiqued the experiment, we are now going to research our health claim for some background information.

Example: Chocolate, Wine and Tea Improve Brain Performance

To research this health claim, you might choose to define exactly what flavonoids and polyphenols were studied. Maybe you would try to determine the relative amounts of flavonoids or polyphenols in the three substances tested, or if there any other substances that have higher amounts of flavonoids or polyphenols.

Research Guidelines:

  • You are required to have a minimum of 4 sources for your paper; one of the resources is going to be your health claim article, one other resource is going to be a primary research article, the two other resources can be websites or news articles.
  • A primary research article is a publication that actual scientists write up themselves and publish for everyone in their profession to read. They can be found using the library’s database search. You will want to find an article that comes from a scientific journal: Journal of Nutrition as an example. Books do not count as primary sources.
  • Use only reliable, high-quality sources. Web searches can be used to supplement the information you find in books and magazine articles, but be sure to use verified sites (.edu, .gov). Wikipedia is NOT a reliable source for information, and should not be listed as one of your references.
  • Use the links below to help you find appropriate sources.
  • You will attach a word document that contains 1 page of bulleted notes (in 12 point font, 1 inch margins, etc.) about your health claim. These notes should be in your own words and not copy and pasted from your sources.
  • After each bulleted note, you should cite the source in which the information came from. (Author, page #)
  • Also in the word document, you should provide a work cited page including all references used in the paper. This should be done using MLA format. This website will help you get started: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/557/06/
  • Within your document, I would like you to include the links to the online sources that you will use for your research. this will allow me to take a look at the quality of your sources.

The purpose of this assignment is to get you started researching. You might have to get other sources as you complete the next assignment, which will be to write a research paper on your health claim.
